The short introduction below is taken from a spontaneous live talk given on the weekly broadcast of One Mountain, Many Paths, which Dr. Marc Gafni co-founded together with his evolutionary partner Barbara Marx Hubbard. These are unedited and unplugged excerpts of Dr. Gafni’s talk created by his students. Thus, the style of this story is the spoken word and not a formal essay. We recommend you to watch the featured clip and watch Dr. Gafni’s teaching on this topic.

People are not naturally good. The belief that people are naturally good is wrong and dangerous.

People are inherently good. The belief that people are not inherently good is wrong and dangerous.

Why is the belief that we’re naturally good wrong and dangerous? What do we mean by good, and what does naturally good mean?

There are five reasons why the belief that “people are naturally good” is dangerous.

1. When something goes wrong, we can always blame it on outside forces.
2. We are no longer morally accountable.
3. We don’t need to train for Goodness.
4. We don’t need to change our inner values.
5. The basic struggle is between the human being and society, and not between the human being and herself.

We need education and training to align our soul and heart to the inherent goodness of Kosmos. Goodness has to be trained.

All of life is about training Goodness. We don’t become Unique Self, we don’t become Homo amor, without engaging in a constant gorgeous process of training. The delight of our life is to engage in that process of training. The reason the training works, the reason that our training is animated by kind of ecstatic urgency and by a joy, is because although we’re not naturally good, we’re inherently good. We participate in Goodness, because Goodness is our deeper nature.
